Summer in Belgium - PART 7

I have said this before and will say it again. A weed is simply a plant that is growing where someone does not want it to grow. Lots of plants that are considered weeds are also plants that people do not consider useful, commercially exploitable or "beautiful" enough to grow simply for the aesthetic value.

And yet all plants have their own beauty if you only take the time too look at them since many seemingly uninteresting or "boring" plants are actually quite beautiful in their own right. They just happen to be too small or only bloom and reveal their uniqueness if allowed to flourish and flower.

No this is not a some deep metaphysical metaphor for anything about people although I guess it could be taken that way.
But look at this "weed garden" full of some sort of dandelions. These are quite different than the dandelions I think most of us are familiar with not only in terms of the size of the plants but the size and structure of the seed heads. They look like balls of cotton fluff.

Forest and Uccle in Spring PART 4

Forest and Uccle in Spring PART 4

This is a continuation of Forest and Uccle Communes in Spring. These are some photos I took in July of some of the Traffic Islands on Chausse d'Alsemberg and Avenue Des Sept Bonniers.

ENJOY!

As I mentioned in previous posts these were the result of a project by an association who wished to encourage people living in the neighbourhood to participate in the growing of flowers in the various areas such as traffic islands, squares where trees were growing and other places.
As you can see the project was very successful. Hopefully it continues. But then since they used selfseeding prairie flowers I think that it should.

Below you can see one of the trees that a resident planted flowers in. I am not sure what kind they are but they grow quite tall as you can see. I have seen yellow ones also. These were not part of the beautification project and were bought and planted by the individual who probably lives there. Not everyone needs an incentive to plant flowers to make their neighbourhood look nice. In fact if you have been reading my blog you will probably have noticed that.

Forest & Uccle Communes in Spring PART 3

A group from the Commune of Uccle had a project where they gave free packs of mixed flower seeds to people in the Commune to plant in the various little plots of ground found along the sidewalks.
Most are the spots where trees are planted but there are some which are bigger and are part of traffic islands etc.
They used various seed mixes using native wild flowers. The types you would normally find growing wild in meadows and fields. The idea was to create a natural self generating flowering plots as they selected plants that would self seed. I guess we will see what happens next year. Some plantings were more successful than others.

The main problem for those that did not succeed has been due to some people chucking their rubbish bags on the spot where the seeds were so they got squished which is what happened to my efforts.

Here is a big area that was seeded and also had a mini picket fence and a big sign as well. I think that the big plots on the traffic islands were planted by the Commune (Town Hall).

They had so many different types of meadow flowers whenever I walked past I would slow down just to admire them.

Another thing that you see around in varrious communes here is baskets of flowers hung up on lamp poles. They stay up through Spring and Summer and come down around Autumn / Fall.

Forest & Uccle Communes in Spring PART 1

I wish I knew what the velvety crimson flowers are. They look stunning with the lavander.

You can see some of the flowers planted at the foot of the trees along the parking spots. I need to find the photo I took of the trees in bloom. There used to be Cherry Trees but they were all cut down a few years ago due to many having been infected by some disease and they were replaced by some other tree whose flowers were not as spectactular.
