Visit to The Orator Hotel - Part 8

As I continued my photo shoot I saw this young Ginger Cat basking on the rocks in the garden.

With the typical sixth sense that model cats have for cameras this chap instantly noticed me and looked casually over before acting all cool and disinterested.

Visit to The Orator Hotel - Part 7

During my visit I met several of the Hotel's feline residents who enjoy the gardens as much if not more than anyone else. Here is another of the cats along with more Bromelias and other plants.

Visit to the Orator Hotel - Part 6

Here are some more photographs of my visit to The Orator Hotel. One of the great things about the gardens is the large variety of plants belonging to the Plant Family Bromeliaceae. Someone with more expertise could probably spend many hours happily cataloguing the different species to be found. the thing about most of the plants in this family is that even when they are not flowering the colours and forms are often more than enough to delight the eye. And when in flower they produce some rather exquisite offerings that last for quite a while prolonging the pleasure they give to their aficionados.

I think it would be safe to say that the variety of Bromeliaceae to be found in the gardens of The Orator Hotel is considerable and one for which they are reputed among fans of plants and the hotel.

Also to be found lurking or sunning themselves among the plants are a number of hotel felines (Felis hotelius or Felis oratorius perhaps?). This character obviously did not like paparazzi because once he/she realised I was taking pictures I was awarded a dirty look and a disappearing act that left little to the imagination.

Chrysothemis pulchella

Amidst the gardens and paths are scattered small clearings with tables and benches for smokers and others wanting to absorb the scenery.
Here is one of the entrances to the pools which are also surrounded by the gardens and harmoniously incorporated into them.

Visit to Orator Hotel - Part 4

Here are more photos of my photo shoot at The Orator Hotel. Here I have included a combination of large photos encompassing more plants to show the combinations and harmonious way that they have been planted as well as some close ups of some of the more intriguing plants and especially some of the smaller but no less beautiful flowers.

In the bottom righ of the photo above is "Silver Dragon" which could be either Ophiopogon japonicas or Liriope spicata. The first is also known as Mondo Grass, Monkey Grass and Fountain Plant while the second is also known as Lily Turf, Creeping Lily turf and Monkey Grass. Both appear to have a cultivar that goes by the mane of Silver Dragon' and pretty much look very much alike which makes it confusing. They both belong to the Plant Family Asparagaceae (also known as the Asparagus family) and the same sub family Nolinoideae.
However, descriptions of Ophiopogon japonicas refer to it being composed of large stolens with tuberous roots while Liriope spicata is refered to as having  prominent rhizomes and frequent tubers. Yet other descriptions refer to rhizomes and stolons as if they were the same thing which they are not. I planted some of these at Alafua and Malifa so I have an idea of what their root system look like and after comparison with pictures I have managed to track down I think it is most likely  Ophiopogon japonicas.

Then amongst the plants in the walkway I saw this one with its head of delicate little flowers. I have not come across this plant before but it is a good example of the type of plant that most people would walk past without even noticing to their loss, simply because it has rather small flowers which do not garb your attention straight away.

Lipstick Palm, Cyrtostachys renda and bromelias

I was also delighted to come across an old mysterious friend which I have but still do not know what it is called. For a while I assumed it was a Heliconia but the leaves resemble those of a Teuila so it cannot be a Heliconia although I am pretty sure that it belongs to the Family Zingiberaceae or at the very least the order Zingiberales.

Stag Horn Fern, Platycerium bifurcatum

Visit to Orator Hotel - Part 1

I have been wanting to take photos of the plants at The Orator Hotel owned and operated by my good friends Jerry Brunt and Charlotte Chan Mow - Brunt at Ululoloa. Jerry is a kindered soul when it comes to plants and when I stopped by to drop some plants off for them I brought my camera to take some photos of some of the many beautiful plants that they have.
Here for your viewing pleasure is the first instalment of that very fruitful photo shoot which includes some of the feline residents one of which was very curious and attentive. I'd like to thank Jerry and Charlotte for letting me wander around the hotel grounds taking photos. I'd also like to thank the friendly kitty that accompanied me through most of my tour.
